Corby Glen Community Primary School: LA Governor Position

Do you have an interest in, or experience of supporting, or working within the education sector? Can you commit to a few hours a month supporting our well-loved local primary school?

The CGCPS governing board will have a vacancy for a Local Authority (LA) Governor for the 2023/2024 academic year and is looking for a self-motivated individual who cares passionately about the school. Previous experience as a governor is useful but not essential (training and mentoring can be arranged).

Below is a brief outline of the position:

Local Authority (LA) Governor role and election process

As a maintained school CGCPS is required to appoint an LA governor. An LA Governor acts as a link between the school and the LA but isn’t a political appointee. The election process entails members of the governing board meeting informally with the applicant. Following interview and discussion by the full governing board (FGB), if successful the applicant will be invited to complete an online form to apply for the position. The LA will review documentation submitted by the Clerk to Governors and, if in agreement with the FGB’s nomination, will appoint the applicant.

The Board has three strategic core functions of which the successful applicant will play a role in maintaining:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

The Board has planned meetings 6 times per academic year; meetings are usually held at 6.00pm at the school, lasting approximately 2 hours; documents to be reviewed are submitted a week prior to meetings.
